Kottke and The Empire Strikes Back
Found in ... Blog Stuff , Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube
We all know that Jason Kottke is my blog hero right? I surfed Kottke.org this afternoon and began reading his review of "The Empire Strikes Back". In this review Jason admits his Star Wars Geekness, and continues to describe some of the hidden plots that struck him this time and had passed him by in the past.
Something that struck me while watching Empire is that every time I see a Star Wars film, I catch something I missed the previous 50 times .... this time around for me occurred during Luke and Vader's first meeting in Cloud City. I never noticed that Vader isn't trying to turn Luke to the Dark Side to join him and the Emperor. He wants Luke to help him overthrow the Emperor and they'll rule as father and son. And then that sets up all sorts of weird shifting alliances and intrigue between the three of them...
Now I have to be careful how I present this, the last thing I would ever want to do is offend Jason -not like he'll ever see this though- and I don't want to come off as a troubled fanatic. Duh; Darth Vader is a frick'n evil Sith lord, all he want is to create power for himself and destroy others. This is the whole meaning of the Sith religion -I call it that because it pretty much is-. It's funny that I read Jason's post today because I also read a post from Movie Blog mentioning this very same evil of the Sith in an interview with actor Ian McDiarmid.
"I think the Emperor is the incarnation of evil, and he's only really interested in power and manipulation ... Nothing else gives him any pleasure. He's a Sith from way back, and they don't have a moral universe. They want to create power for themselves by destroying others. It's very interesting to play a character that is irredeemable. There are even real people that have that kind of motiveless malignancy. It's like watching [former Yugoslavia president Slobodan] Milosevic, somebody that only seems interested in power and manipulation."
So there you have it; I know how it is, the last time I watched Empire I thought it was so cool that Vader blocked Boba Fett's blaster shot in the carbonite chamber so it would not hit 3-PO. -Because he frick'n built him-
