Just Call Me "Skipper" Berf
Found in ... Leisure Time
It's official, I've bought my fist sail boat, and it is all set up and ready to be sailed -all I need to do is learn how to sail-. I am now the proud owner of a 1979 -I like retro- 18' Hobie Cat, and the cool thing is that it is the same color as my first car. So I will be christening "The Blue Torpedo" this weekend. I have joined Fleet 119 right here in Buffalo and will be sailing out of Evangola State Park. Gonna be partying it up this summer on Sunset Bay and Angola with my new crew of Bukezilla, Mordiki and Anth. Ahoy!

Lohan to Play Barbarella in Remake
Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

I knew it was only a matter of time until someone would remake the 1968 sexy sci-fi comic book adaptation of a galaxy wondering nymphomaniac named Barbarella. I am also proud to report that via [The Movie Blog] and [Cinescape] it may be true that hottie Lindsay Lohan will be portraying the seductively adventurous role that was once played by Jane Fonda -during her "oh so sexy" days-. For those of you who have never scene Barbarella, it's frick'n stupid man, but sexy as hell, a true sci-fi geek spank fest flick with fur. So LL would be a great fit, I mean who wouldn't want to see her rolling around all half naked -of course they would probably spice up the 2006 version to full frontal-. The only thing I can see that would ruin this remake would be if LL continues to look the way she does, if she doesn't put on a few lbs it will not work! In order for this to be a success LL has to fill out those reveling space suits and bring back her prior curvy look, and only then will she be able to give the character justice.

Today is the day that I will be introduced to the world of Sailboat racing. I have agreed to become a member of a 9 man crew for a weekly racing team that meets on the waters of Buffalo. I am very excited about this. For some time now I have been trying to get into this sport, and now I finally can.
To make things even more exciting - I am purchasing my first boat this weekend. It is an 18' Hobie Cat and I will be storing it at Evangola State Park. Should be a very fun summer!

This is just a creepy story man. Over at LifeHacker I read about this guy and his sister who were murdered last Monday, and how he had left a blog post prior to his death. So being interested in learning more about this I ventured over to the guys site and there it was his final post. To add to the creepiness, the post describes his sisters ex-boyfriend barging into the apartment and pacing around all steamed up. Flipp'n scary shit man. The deceased blog hosted by Xanga ToTo247's continues to display his final posting with over 3126 "eprops" and 255 comments, all basically saying R.I.P.

Techies in Training Decline: When Do I Ask for More Money?
Found in ... Technoramblings

Thanks to the savvy Gina "Handy" Trapani over at LifeHacker, we are provided with a link to CNN's article from yesterday titled Computer degrees losing appeal. Now I don't know if I should dance or cry about this news. It's true that there was a major rush in the I.T. majors a handful of years back -when I was in college- students like myself thought they were going to own helicopters due to there techie tendencies -at last hope for the geeks-. Then after the declining slope in the I.T job market, programmers and such were not in very high demand -unless you had years of experience- so newbies like myself were having a very difficult time finding jobs that would justify their years of education ("I went to grad school and all I got was this lousy job"). Now with this news from CNN there is a possibility that the I.T field will be less saturated with hungry professionals fighting for jobs.
The number of undergraduates signing up for computer degrees continues to decline, fueling concerns among tech companies that there won't be enough skilled workers to meet demand...I have mixed feelings about this. On one side, knowing that the "peopleware" will be more sparse, the professionals in the field will be worth more. On the other side, there will be fewer I.T gurus and the ones working will have less and less support/backups, which can make working in some shops overwhelming. What do you think?

Lucas and the Blog Galaxy: Star Wars Blogs Take Flight
Found in ... Blog Stuff
As of May 05, 2005 @ 09:34 AM, George Lucas and his Star Wars Community site has added Blogging to it's repertoire of features. Star Wars Blogs is a site which allows fans to create their own Blogs and post on topics such as game, the movies, the books and a number of miscellaneous categories. The SW Bloggers also have the ability to set up author profiles, Blogrolls, favorites and comments on Blogs across the system. The idea is very much like what Major League Baseball launched with MLBlogs. From a social computing standpoint, this is a great addition to the community aspects of Star Wars.com and once again proves the value of Blogging technology. The service cost about $40.00 but also includes all of the perks of being a hyperspace member -which is the members section of the site-. From a Blogspert's opinion, it is seriously lacking in options and customization features, almost giving it the look and feel of a fancied up forum, at least it's a start. Check out Star Wars Blogs and let me know what you think.

"Say Hello to My Little Friend !" ~Tony Montana
Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube
I have been so lazy lately. I apologize to my reader who will more than likely abandon me for good. I have been a very busy beaver over the last few weeks, and things seem to be coming to an end so I can now take a few minutes to contribute to BerfNet.
I wanted to talk about a movie I watched last night that I haven't seen in a dogs age -corny line I know- and that flick is Brian De Palma's 1983 classic Scarface. I think I am going to add this movie to my next DVD shoping frenzy, because it is one of those flicks I think I can watch almost anytime. Seriously I am ranking it that high on my list -for those of you who don't know, other titles that I hold in this manner are Jaws, Star Wars and Two Girls and a Guy to name a few-. Number 1 bonus of the movie is unquestionably the performance of Al Pacino as Tony Montana. He is frik'n nuts but yet inspiring due to his powerful motivation and life lessons.
In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.
Amigo, the only thing in this world that gives orders is balls. Balls. You got that?
There are so many more, but that will do to get my point across. Bonus 2 of Scarface is Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira. She is absolutely smoking in this role -of course I like the skinny coked up chick look-. The dialog is great minus an unconvincing Cuban accent from Robert Loggia which reminded me how happy I get when he is finally taken out. The move is also a smart interpretation between old management and new management -which is an argument my father and I have from time to time-. Frank portraying the side of old management; easy paced, straight and narrow, not very creative, you know the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. On the other side you have the young and hungry Tony or new management, sporting his creative thinking and perusing outside the box, fighting for change and expansion. Now much like in the real world, when Tony proposes his new ideas to Frank, they are seen as the actions of a cowboy and quickly rejected -much like many young creative minds-. So Tony leaves to generate his own business, and who do you think takes over control?
Any way I'm rambling, to sum up Scarface is a killer flick and I am convinced must have for any collection. I sure plan on picking up the special anniversary edition for my library.

Selling T-Shirts Online and Fictional BerfNet Merch
Found in ... Brain Spill
Jason Kottke has posted an interesting note on the success of T-Shirt merchants online. Apparently there has been a number of successful online entrepreneurs who are making a nice side piece pawning off funny shirts. You can read the details at the Wall Street Journal, but in summary it covers a few case studies in which online sites were launched along with a merchandising plan. Later the sites fell, but the merchandising continues to create revenue. I've seen this in the past, sites -some even blogs- selling T-Shirts, mugs, stickers and my favorite .. thongs -not that I wear them you sick`o; it's for the ladies-. That got me wondering, if BerfNet were to create a merchandising line, what would it say? This image was all I could come up with in a pinch, but if your imagination far exceeds mine, then post a few ideas and maybe we can get something going.

This is to much. Josh Hallett editor of Hyku.com has a little diddy on his imaginary casting of the Blog movie. Very creative I must say. Listing some of the Blogosphere's top dogs and the silver screen best pick faces. Just a few of the combos are Philip Seymour Hoffman as Robert Scoble, Harrison Ford as Glenn Reynolds, Kevin Spacey as Dan Gillmor and Tom Sizemore as Nick Denton. Nice match ups; I wonder who would be good for the part of Berf? The character would more than likely be a side note to the side note to the side note, but hey I've got plenty of time.

Blogger Invited to Private Screening of EPIII - Gave Flick a 7
Found in ... Blog Stuff , Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube
Within the past few years the blogging phenomenon has grown and the credibility of the editors has grown along with it. Many media companies have been paying more attention to the influence bloggers have on their readers. John Campea, editor of The Movie Blog was invited to a special screening of Star Wars "Revenge of the Sith" last night in Toronto Canada along with other members of the press -see bloggers can be considered press as well-. John and his cohort Richard Brunton -the UK perspective- attract multiple thousands of readers per day with their commentary on movies, celebrities, in production topics and a small tasteful amount of trade gossip. The invite to the screening is a clear indication that promotional groups and marketing teams are finally beginning to utilize the voices that make up these Blogs. Being a reader of The Movie Blog myself, I couldn't be more excited for the progress of the site. Granted John still has to go to work everyday, but I am sure he is not far from following in the foot steps of Jason Kottke.
Well enough of the Blog chatter, and lets get to the real interesting stuff, which is Johns take on the new Star Wars flick. I have mentioned that I have already read the screen play. I was happy with the story and I am eagerly waiting to see how it is all laid out in front of me. After reading Johns review of the movie -which by the way he gives a 7- I still feel positive about what I will see.
The basic story of Revenge of the Sith was (in my opinion) the best laid out story of all the Star Wars films. The political maneuverings, the moral dilemmas, the torn loyalties, and ultimately Skywalker's decent into the dark side. If you were to read it as a 5 page synopsis, the story and plot stands out as exceptional ones. -John Campea

Guess Who: Am I a Dictator or a Sitcom Personality?
Found in ... Web Dev & Code Monkey Talk
This is entertaining; if your into dictators, sitcom characters and crafty web programming. Small Time Entertainment is a site with a number of clever little anti-productivity games and fun things, and I was recently introduced to their Guess the Dictator and/or Television Sit-Com Character game by a co-worker in an email. "Guess the Dic/Char" is a pretty clever little dynamic questionnaire which determines who you are trying to be based on how you answer the provided questions. When I did it, it was right on the money for Jack Tripper, Saddam Hussein and a few others. I did stump the system using Rachel from Friends and Balki Bartokomous from Perfect Strangers. Adding to the cleverness, the programmer(s) provide a form to add to the database of answers and questions for when you stump the system. Give it a go; I think if you answer correctly you can actually get it to answer George Bush.

No, wait! Doc. The... the... the bruise... the bruise on your head. I know how that happened! You told me the whole story. Thanks to Sploid who posted a headline addressing the upcoming Time Traveler convention, hosted by none other than the frick'n geniuses at MIT. I can't be 100% positive on the validity of the event, and if it is truly being hosted by MIT (check out the root URL [web] looks fishy), but I am much dumberer than the creative minds of MIT - so perhaps this event will truly bring out the travelers from tomorrow. Episode III: Words from the One Critic I Will Listen to
Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube
I have not been shy about my excitement concerning the upcoming Star Wars film "Revenge of the Sith". I have already read the screen play, which I was extremely pleased with -and no that doesn't ruin it for me- and continue to anticipate the visuals of this swan song. Despite the plethora of complaints surrounding the prior episodes I was happy with them. While waiting I have watched everything multiple times, which has led to a true love of the new characters -which I think is how we all fell in love with the original cast-, and now as sad as it will be seeing the culmination of the Star Wars Saga, I eagerly await the beginning scroll of EIII. Even though I am confident that this will not be a disappointment, the review given by Kevin Smith eliminates any doubt I had. Kevin is the type of film buff my overweight friends and I can relate to on a geekness level not found around every corner. So needless to say, I respect his opinion much more than some old has been who loves foreign films and "The Notebook". Kevin wrote this on his forum:
Yes, it's just that dark - and rightfully so. This is the birth of Darth Vader we're talking about.

I love LifeHacker, matter of fact, I do not go a day without consulting the helpful bright mind that is Gina Trapani. Today was no different, I visited LifeHacker earlier and was surprised to see that the download of the day was a favorite of mine Edit Plus (it's better than Ultra Edit). Surprisingly I have been using Edit Plus for over 5 years now, so I was wondering how it became such a hot new item. Also mentioned in the post was the $30 user license, which is not exactly true. I thought LifeHacker would go a bit deeper into the tool and let all of its readers know that the free 30 day trial never expires. So download Edit Plus's Trial version and have a blast. I use it for all of my code monkeying around.
