 Countdown to King Kong

Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

As many know Peter Jackson is finishing up his rendition of the 1933 classic "King Kong". In fact the first trailer for the movie is now available online and I highly recommend giving it a look see if you're interested in the movie.

I have been hearing mixed feelings about this project, number one is the question of Jackson's talents. From zombie movie to Middle Earth, was the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy a one/three shot wonder, or is Jackson truly a major creative force in the film industry? Let's not forget that the King Kong story has been done many times and reiterating scenes we have scene time and time again just with fancy CGI is not going to impress.

Another factor which I can say worries me not a bit, is the casting of Jack Black as Carl Denham. People are saying that he is not talented enough for a serious role. It's one thing to be fat and wacky and another when you have a major supporting role in a dramatic film. I personally think that the casting of Mr. Black is one of the major selling/strong aspects of the picture. I hate to boast but I knew Jack Black was going to be huge star after seeing him in "Airborne" as a bully rollerblader. After that I was always psyched to see him in a movie. When he poped up in "The Jackal" as the quarky weapons guy, I said to myself, this guy is going to be all over the place. So I do not feel concerned about what Jack Black will add to the show.

All in all the cast that has been assembled for the King Kong remake is rather impressive. We have Naomi Watts staring as Ann Darrow the actress who steals the heart of the mighty Kong, Adrien Brody plays Jack Driscoll the leading man to Naomi's Ann and a few other familiar faces from Jackson's stable of talent. Andy Serkis provides the movement of Kong much like he did as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movies and he also plays a small part as a cook.

The visuals look spectacular, which is not surprising coming from the creator of 3 fantastically visual projects, and Kong himself looks more real and seems to move like a true gorilla and not a man in an ape suit.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie, one for its visuals and the other two are JAck Black and Naomi Watts. Jack is hysterically funny and I am positive he will do a great job and Naomi, well lets just say you can't blame Kong for wanting to carry her around - she's a total babe and I dig the Aussie accent, even though she wont be using it in this movie.

What do you think?

Yesterday my boy Paul had a little get together at his place. Nothing major just some good friends, food, beer and some summer brew. It was good practice for the coming weekend, but I for one should have stopped around 6:00 - but noooo, I had to keep going, and getting into Paul's Johnny Walker Gold Label and getting completely hammered. So needless to say I was relatively useless at work today. But I don't think I was the only one suck'n them down lile Coca-Cola.

Who Should Play the Joker in the Batman Begins Sequel?

Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

There has been allot of talk -rumors- floating around about who is and should play the Joker in the sequel to Batman Begins. For those of you have yet to see the movie, you might want to shut your eyes because me writing about the Joker reference at the end of the movie on the roof top scene with Gordon and Batman discussing the Joker playing card could potentially upset you. - OK so don't read that -

Via The Movie Blog, the boys who fill the site with movie news have been discussing this topic quite a bit, so I thought I would let my readers -Hi MOM- know which actors are currently in consideration for the role, and see what your thoughts were.

The first actor that I read about that was a big fav for the role of the most infamous Batman villain is Crispin Glover. Glover is a great actor who until the past few years was black listed in the industry by Steven Spielberg after a legal battle surrounding "Back to the Future II" (if you notice Glover does not play the father in the 3rd movie.) Glover was a very good villain in the "Charlie's Angels" franchise, and excelled even further when he fronted in "Willard". Glover is a tad on the crazy side, and I think he would look very convincing in the Joker garb.

Mark Hamill is the next runner up for the part of the Joker. Hamill does know the character better than anyone on the list due to his work as the voice of the Joker in the animated series. Which I would like to add he does a great job of. Hamill has had a dodgy career post Star Wars, but does manage to show up in things from time to time -kind of like saying "hey remember me I'm Mark Hamill, I was Luke in Star Wars."-

Lachy Hulme is the next thespian on the list of potential punster plunderer's. I personally don't know dick about hulme and would be a horrible judge of his abilities to fill the shoes. All I do know is that he is from Australia and stared in the Matrix movies and I don't even remember seeing him. So if anyone can enlighten me on his skills it would be greatly appreciated.

Finally we come to the latest addition to the list of candidates Paul Bettany. I am a big fan of Bettany, he is a nearly flawless actor who is in direr need of a role that will really boost his carrier. I was first impressed by Bettany as the imaginary roommate in "A Beautiful Mind" and he continued to complement Crowe in "Master and Commander". I was originally leaning towards Crispin Glover as the Joker, but once I read that Bettany was in consideration I may be changing my mind. I think he would do a damn good job as the purple nemesis.

Well there you have it kids; the current list of the faces being looked at for the role of the Joker. All of them good ideas, but who would be the best? Who would you like to see playing the Joker in the next Batman movie? Share your thoughts.

What Does Ebert Think? Herbie: Fully Loaded

Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

I have said it in the past and I stand by my opinion, that movie critics don't have a clue about what their talking about. So many times I have read crapy reviews and have ended up loving the movie. Except for when it concerns Roger Ebert! Ebert is the critic of critics, and more times than not I have found myself agreeing with his take on films. Ebert has been at this game for a long time, and he is the best. Since he is the best I thought I would dedicate a new column on BerfNet titled "What Does Ebert Think?" covering his thoughts on new movies at the box office and tossing in my 2 cents as well -if it's worth anything-. For the first edition of "What Does Ebert Think?" let's cover Ebert's review of the new Disney move Herbie: Fully Loaded staring Lindsay Lohan. Ebert gives this re-visit to the Disney past 2/5 stars and often refers to the more corny aspects of the flick.

TMB to Take a Wack at Video Editions

Found in ... Blog Stuff

The Movie Blog's editor and owner John Campea does a semi weekly audio edition with his buddy Doug who is a Canadian comedian -but we wont hold that against him-. They discuss some of the movie biz gossip -production and new movie bews, never tabloid headlines-, hit on some of the new titles in the box office and DVD, and finally that will review a few movies they have scene or one in particular - which may be a big deal. The audio edition is actually pretty good, it has made me think of doing something similar with my friend Anth -we are disgusting movie nuts-, but now I read on the site that John and crew are debating on trying to do a video edition of TMB. Despite what I think about the idea, the readers of TMB have expressed their willingness to download the video. I would think that the video edition would turn out like a cheesy public access show, unless they were willing to put in the time and make it look really nice. I have been blogging for years now in one form or another and let me tell you, it's hard enough trying to fill my site with stuff and work, play and experiment with new things. I mean a guy gotta get laid. So unless John and his cronies are able to take on maintenance of TMB full time -and if they can, right on- I would stick with the easy audio. Don't forget to follow the K.I.S.S principle, "keep it simple stupid".

Six Apart Adds Money Making Power to Type Pad

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Thanks to my handy dandy Google Alerts, I was able to catch this article on Business Wire -thats right, I read business stuff- which describes some of the new features Six Apart has added to the ever so popular Type Pad blogging service.

Through an integrated service offering from Kanoodle, a leading provider of sponsored links for content pages and search results, TypePad Pro users can now immediately place Kanoodle's content-targeted sponsored links -- text-based ads related to the editorial content appearing on their weblog -- on their sites and view a simple earnings report that allows them to monitor their earnings. Now, each time a visitor clicks through a sponsored link, the weblogger will earn a portion of the proceeds from this ad. These features are available directly through the TypePad application, greatly streamlining the process of adding earning elements to a weblog.

Money earned by webloggers from Kanoodle's content-targeted sponsored links in the first 90 days will automatically be applied toward TypePad subscription fees. After 90 days, any extra money will made be available for the weblogger to spend via PayPal or to pay for future subscription fees.

I personally think this is great, for not so web savvy blog enthusiasts, adding Google Ads or applying a banner rotation program can be out of the question due to difficulty. Now these blog hobbyists have an easy "click click click" solution to making a few extra bucks, or at least getting their hosting for free. Now that I think of it - why the hell am I not doing something like this? I should get cracking on that!

 Star Wars Inspired N.A.S.A Project

Found in ... Techno-Toys

This month in New Scientist Space there is a great article on a new flying eye droid, which will orbit a space station or craft searching and cataloging damage reports. Personally I think it resembles a probe droid from Star Wars -and that's OK, I love that stuff-.

The Miniature Autonomous Extravehicular Robotic Camera has now completed a docking test at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and could be ready for its first space mission as early as 2006 or 2007. If it is flown on space shuttle missions, Mini AERCam could hover under the orbiter’s belly to check for damage to the heat shield.

But it will not fly on the next shuttle mission. Instead, astronauts aboard Discovery will use an extension of the shuttle’s robotic arm to peer underneath the orbiter. Astronauts say that the manoeuvre is awkward and there is very little clearance between the robot arm and the shuttle’s wings - using Mini AERCam in the future would avoid those problems.

Captains Blog 000001: Danger on the Water; A Fathers Day Which will Never Be Forgotten

Found in ... Leisure Time

Today marked the first voyage of the new boat with my father aboard. It was fathers day and I decided to take the old man sailing. We arrived at the boat around 12:00 pm and sst sail shortly after. The wind was at approximately 7-9 with 1.5 - 2 ft waves on the lake. This was the most wind I have dealt since putting the boat in the water, but I remained confident in my newly acquired skills.

The boat was sailing well, we had good speed and were sailing towards Angola. I decided to tack to the opposite direction and sail farther up tide, this way if anything bad was to happen, we would at least be drifting in the direction of the beach we launched from. This approach was working well, we had great speed and at times we were very close to getting the starboard hull out of the water. A few hours of sailing and we found ourselves roughly a mile or two off shore. We were sailing with the wind on the port side when my father noticed the shroud on the port side swinging in the breeze and clanging on the trapeze wires. "That can't be good" my father points out with concerned question.

"No that's not good!" "Grab that quick!" I shout as I jump up immediately and drop the main sail and roll up the jib, we were in danger of losing the mast and if that was to come crashing down it would be difficult from stoping it from sinking to the bottom of the lake, or ripping my main sail in half.

The new movie site from Weblogs Inc "Cinematical" has a great little posting on the new Star Wars Trilogy, compared to the original. It also goes into detail on how the actors had harder roles to play due to all of the external material between films -to maintain character consistency-. One good point was the importance of the "Clone Wars" cartoon which aired on Cartoon Network. Basically describing how those who had not scene the cartoons whould not understand situations in the final movie, and whould have a much harder time believing in Skywalkers experience as a war hero.

The Next Video Game that will Take Control over My Life via [Euro Gamer]
Those who know me are aware of my weakness to great video games and how they can take over my life from time to time. "The Sims" had that affect on me for a while, and "Star Wars Galaxies" controlled my life for over a year when it came out. I have been free of this burden for about a year now -thanks to a great 12 step program- but now I fear there is game comming that will get me back on the sauce. "The Movies" will be the next game that will take over my life. This is the game I always wanted to have and now it is on its way. This is going to be awsome, a Sim much like "Rollercoaster Tycoon", "Theme Park Tycoon" and "Sim City" but based on the movie industry. You will be able to control every angle of the business, from developing your studio, pruning your actors, writing your scripts, and making little movie trailers. I just hope this doesn't come out until winter when I only leave the house to go skiing.

Porn Masters Have New Rules to Follow via [Life Hacker + Wired News]
So interesting the online adult industry is, if I could only drop my morals I would attempt to become the porn king of the Queen City. Well I wont so I guess I will have to conitue reading about it, like in this article from Wired news which discusses new restrictions and paper work envolved when displaying adult content on the web. Apparently Porn Masters will need to provide age verification documents for all of the models/actors appearing on the site, else remove that content or pay the penalty. At first I thought this was no big deal, I mean they should be keeping a tight grasp on the whole age thing anyway -remember Tracy Lords-, but I read on and learn that even on sites that steal images from elsewhere on the net must have this documentation. So it would be logical that within the rollout of this new enforcement, porn masters that are simply redistributing content will be shutting down and that the industry leaders will have the primary advantage since they can have the proper documentation.

The site is OK, there are some major flaws in the design which will make it difficult for readers to get into it. For one there are no titles on the posts, just dates. Which as a journal is fine, but I failed to read much since I couldn't get an idea of the post subject matter at a glance. Also he is only displaying 1 post per page which makes navigating a pain in the boring ass. The site is developed using Word Press which is a so-so product and commenting and trackbacks are enabled -which is good-. Kevin is also using Flickr which is probably the only blog standard he is following. Still it's Kevin Smith and he normally breaks the norm.

 Jaws Strikes During 30th Anniversary

Found in ... Some Kind`a News

This is unbelievable; Sunday of last week not only was the 30th anniversary of the movie Jaws, but it also marked the first Great White shark attack off the New Jersey Shore since 1916. 17 year old surfer Ryan Horton was bitten, he stated that he fell while up on his board, and his ankle felt like it was hit by a baseball. After swiming to shore, he notice a sizable chunk that was missing from his ankle, and rushed himself to the hospital. Experts then said that the bite marks are suspected to be of a Great White shark.

Great whites prefer cold water and are known to swim in the waters off New Jersey... The director of a leading shark research center who examined pictures of Ryan's wounds said the teen was lucky to be alive. "Small is in the eye of the beholder," said George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research. "By white shark standards, this one was just a babe."

"It really helps with motivation," said Eliza Bang, the class teacher. "As a platform for encouraging group work, it's amazing."

Bang uses the board to display a wide range of learning materials on her computer, from web pages to video clips. It is also used as a lunch-time reward for students: The children watched Black Beauty on the same screen that was used earlier for geography.

"It helps kids build the big picture and learn the meaning of almost anything," Bang said. "If a kid wants to research boats they can do a PowerPoint presentation, a Word document or they can do a movie or slide show to show to the whole class."

Jaws Fest: Martha's Vineyard Welcomes Bruce

Found in ... Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube , Leisure Time

This weekend marks the 30th anniversary of my favorite and one of the best movies ever filmed Jaws. Martha's Vineyard -filming location of the original film- is celebrating with Jaws Fest 05, and placing a life sized replica of the monster great white -carcaridon carcarious- named Bruce. In addition to showing off their new attraction Jaws Fest will display Amity Island just as in the 1975 film.

Jaws Fest begins as guests arrive by ferry or plane and are greeted with signage and banners welcoming them to AMITY ISLAND. Local businesses will again display their 1975 signage from the filming, and over 25 members of the original cast & crew return to Amity for a fabulous weekend celebration. See schedule of events for where and when to see cast & crew.
What a great idea! I only whish Anth and I could make it, we would go crazy there -it's our favorite movie of all time-. I'm also surprised that none of my daily read movie sites have mentioned this. I must be getting better at this stuff?
