 What a Mouth on Mena

Found in ... Blog Stuff

menaTrott.jpgThis is rather interesting and I'm a bit late posting this due to my laziness. Bloggers out there may find this entertaining. According to The Register (a UK site), Six Apart co-founder an president Mena Trott lost her cool a bit at Les Blogs (a Blogging conference in Paris).

Mena had made some suggestions and expressed some discomfort with the way blogging has become nasty in circles. This of course is true, people do get nasty and many blogs post tons of false info and target others -hell I've done it-. This caused a member of the audience to post a comment on the IRC board which was running in the conference. Ben Metcalfe tossed up a "Bullshit" comment which got Mena going.

The two exchanged opinions and it sounds as if punches were not held back. This lead to Mena calling Ben an "Asshole", which I find funny because Mena was just talking about being nicer. In any event, the whole tiff blew up on the web. In one corner we have one of the innovators of the most popular Internet technologies since email and in the other corner a blogger who works for the BBC.

Both points had stability. Mena's touched more on the responsibility we bloggers should adopt and Ben's was more on the side of free press and censorship. I personally have taken both paths from time to time.

Both have posted their take on the episode so check them out and tell me what you think.

Ben Metcalfe's post
Mena's post

The online cross talk does emphasize peoples points on the community that has grown within the Blogosphere.

 Where Have You Been?

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Well hello hello kiddies, how the hell are ya!? I know I've been gone for a long time - since September in fact - but I've been up to so much stuff. Along with writing for the Movie Blog I have moved into a new place, traveled to California, gone to some awesome concerts and now I'm getting ready to hit up Philadelphia and Atlantic City w/ Bukezilla and Anth.

The Movie Blog: I must say I've had a great time writing for the Movie Blog, but unfortunately due to progression in my career and my available time, I haven't been able to contribute as much as I have in the past. I plan on continuing, but I can only manage writing here and there. The guys that run the site are great guys, you should really check out the site and give them your support -would I ever direct you incorrectly?-.

If you haven't checked out my stuff on the Movie Blog, here is an archive of what I have contributed as of now. Check it out, for some time I was quite the antagonist.

Brad's Posts on TMB.

Proper Pop.com: Since I had such a blast doing TMB, I've been having thoughts of launching another site. No disrespect for the Movie Bloggers, but I'm a web guy and I love control and design. And though I do plan on continuing my relationship with the Movie Blog, Bukezilla, D.Sidious and Dr. Teeth will be writing for Proper Pop.com -coming soon-. Proper Pop will be a blog on all things Pop culture and the tests we have done all have looked great. So keep your eyes out for that.

Writing for The Movie Blog and Things to Come

Found in ... Blog Stuff , Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

So sorry for the radio silence as of lately, but I have been working on so many new projects. I've just begun writing for The Movie Blog, and been having a blast with that. It's a subject I have always been into I finally have a great outlet to express my thoughts and fine tune some of my writing chops. The site does fantastic, some where in the realm of 750,000 visits a month. I had done a bit of press research on the site and found that the boys over at News Askew read the site. Thats right Kevin Smith reads the movie blog.

I have also been working on a web project with some people in Manhattan, and that has been a lot of fun.

I will still be posting to Berf Net -I can't neglect my baby that much-, but for the time being I will be directing my creative energies to The Movie Blog. Continue to check back because I will be posting pictures of my adventures and still using Berf Net as an online diary of sorts.

TMB is Moving Up in the InterWeb

Found in ... Blog Stuff

I received an emial from The Movie Blog's editor John Campea this morning -that's right, I'm cool like that- and he was very excited to announce that TMB was mentioned on USA Today's website under Hot Sites & TV Shows. This is HUGE -as I replied to John- for TMB. I've been an avid reader of TMB for a long time now and it has been something to watch this site gain in credibility and popularity. I have always been impressed by the crew's take on film and often their information on up and coming pictures are correct -if they are wrong they let you know-. So congratulation John, Richard and Doug, keep it up and before you know it you'll be syndicated all over the web. Check out TMB and post your comments - tell them Brad sent ya.

TMB to Take a Wack at Video Editions

Found in ... Blog Stuff

The Movie Blog's editor and owner John Campea does a semi weekly audio edition with his buddy Doug who is a Canadian comedian -but we wont hold that against him-. They discuss some of the movie biz gossip -production and new movie bews, never tabloid headlines-, hit on some of the new titles in the box office and DVD, and finally that will review a few movies they have scene or one in particular - which may be a big deal. The audio edition is actually pretty good, it has made me think of doing something similar with my friend Anth -we are disgusting movie nuts-, but now I read on the site that John and crew are debating on trying to do a video edition of TMB. Despite what I think about the idea, the readers of TMB have expressed their willingness to download the video. I would think that the video edition would turn out like a cheesy public access show, unless they were willing to put in the time and make it look really nice. I have been blogging for years now in one form or another and let me tell you, it's hard enough trying to fill my site with stuff and work, play and experiment with new things. I mean a guy gotta get laid. So unless John and his cronies are able to take on maintenance of TMB full time -and if they can, right on- I would stick with the easy audio. Don't forget to follow the K.I.S.S principle, "keep it simple stupid".

Six Apart Adds Money Making Power to Type Pad

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Thanks to my handy dandy Google Alerts, I was able to catch this article on Business Wire -thats right, I read business stuff- which describes some of the new features Six Apart has added to the ever so popular Type Pad blogging service.

Through an integrated service offering from Kanoodle, a leading provider of sponsored links for content pages and search results, TypePad Pro users can now immediately place Kanoodle's content-targeted sponsored links -- text-based ads related to the editorial content appearing on their weblog -- on their sites and view a simple earnings report that allows them to monitor their earnings. Now, each time a visitor clicks through a sponsored link, the weblogger will earn a portion of the proceeds from this ad. These features are available directly through the TypePad application, greatly streamlining the process of adding earning elements to a weblog.

Money earned by webloggers from Kanoodle's content-targeted sponsored links in the first 90 days will automatically be applied toward TypePad subscription fees. After 90 days, any extra money will made be available for the weblogger to spend via PayPal or to pay for future subscription fees.

~Six Apart Adds Earnings Capabilities to TypePad Weblogs
Business Wire
I personally think this is great, for not so web savvy blog enthusiasts, adding Google Ads or applying a banner rotation program can be out of the question due to difficulty. Now these blog hobbyists have an easy "click click click" solution to making a few extra bucks, or at least getting their hosting for free. Now that I think of it - why the hell am I not doing something like this? I should get cracking on that!

Lucas and the Blog Galaxy: Star Wars Blogs Take Flight

Found in ... Blog Stuff

As of May 05, 2005 @ 09:34 AM, George Lucas and his Star Wars Community site has added Blogging to it's repertoire of features. Star Wars Blogs is a site which allows fans to create their own Blogs and post on topics such as game, the movies, the books and a number of miscellaneous categories. The SW Bloggers also have the ability to set up author profiles, Blogrolls, favorites and comments on Blogs across the system. The idea is very much like what Major League Baseball launched with MLBlogs. From a social computing standpoint, this is a great addition to the community aspects of Star Wars.com and once again proves the value of Blogging technology. The service cost about $40.00 but also includes all of the perks of being a hyperspace member -which is the members section of the site-. From a Blogspert's opinion, it is seriously lacking in options and customization features, almost giving it the look and feel of a fancied up forum, at least it's a start. Check out Star Wars Blogs and let me know what you think.

"Blog" the Movie and Who Would Play Who

This is to much. Josh Hallett editor of Hyku.com has a little diddy on his imaginary casting of the Blog movie. Very creative I must say. Listing some of the Blogosphere's top dogs and the silver screen best pick faces. Just a few of the combos are Philip Seymour Hoffman as Robert Scoble, Harrison Ford as Glenn Reynolds, Kevin Spacey as Dan Gillmor and Tom Sizemore as Nick Denton. Nice match ups; I wonder who would be good for the part of Berf? The character would more than likely be a side note to the side note to the side note, but hey I've got plenty of time.

Blogger Invited to Private Screening of EPIII - Gave Flick a 7

Found in ... Blog Stuff , Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

Within the past few years the blogging phenomenon has grown and the credibility of the editors has grown along with it. Many media companies have been paying more attention to the influence bloggers have on their readers. John Campea, editor of The Movie Blog was invited to a special screening of Star Wars "Revenge of the Sith" last night in Toronto Canada along with other members of the press -see bloggers can be considered press as well-. John and his cohort Richard Brunton -the UK perspective- attract multiple thousands of readers per day with their commentary on movies, celebrities, in production topics and a small tasteful amount of trade gossip. The invite to the screening is a clear indication that promotional groups and marketing teams are finally beginning to utilize the voices that make up these Blogs. Being a reader of The Movie Blog myself, I couldn't be more excited for the progress of the site. Granted John still has to go to work everyday, but I am sure he is not far from following in the foot steps of Jason Kottke.

Well enough of the Blog chatter, and lets get to the real interesting stuff, which is Johns take on the new Star Wars flick. I have mentioned that I have already read the screen play. I was happy with the story and I am eagerly waiting to see how it is all laid out in front of me. After reading Johns review of the movie -which by the way he gives a 7- I still feel positive about what I will see.

The basic story of Revenge of the Sith was (in my opinion) the best laid out story of all the Star Wars films. The political maneuverings, the moral dilemmas, the torn loyalties, and ultimately Skywalker's decent into the dark side. If you were to read it as a 5 page synopsis, the story and plot stands out as exceptional ones.

Yes I think it's great that SixApart is doing so well, and I hope they continue to grow -shameless ass kissing so I can get a job-, but on the other hand as a MT developer myself -you wouldn't tell from the looks of this site, but really I have chops- I don't want every web designer in the World to be able to whip up a fancy Blog in no time at all. Found in ... Blog Stuff , Flick Picks & the Boob-Tube

We all know that Jason Kottke is my blog hero right? I surfed Kottke.org this afternoon and began reading his review of "The Empire Strikes Back". In this review Jason admits his Star Wars Geekness, and continues to describe some of the hidden plots that struck him this time and had passed him by in the past.

Something that struck me while watching Empire is that every time I see a Star Wars film, I catch something I missed the previous 50 times .... this time around for me occurred during Luke and Vader's first meeting in Cloud City. I never noticed that Vader isn't trying to turn Luke to the Dark Side to join him and the Emperor. He wants Luke to help him overthrow the Emperor and they'll rule as father and son. And then that sets up all sorts of weird shifting alliances and intrigue between the three of them...

A Relationship Rekindled between Audi and Gawker Media

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Mind my poor graphic, but hey it's all I had to work with on short notice. I may be a bit late on this one but I like to believe I am pretty quick. I noticed on Jalopnik that Audi has returned as one of the advertisers. I am not sure if they are sponsoring the site, but they do seem to have a major presence. Now I admit I rarely read Jalopnik -what can I say I'm not a car guy- but since I have a stiffy for Gawker Media -I'll tell ya later- I like to stay abreast to what they are doing on all their sites. Audi was the original sponsor of the auto junky site after its launch, but some time later they pulled out and we saw that the NYT auto section had taken over as the primary sponsor. I personally didn't think that was a good sign for the online publication but a sponsor is a sponsor. It is nice to see Audi back, and it certainly gives an indication that Gawker Media continues to stay focused.

April Fools Day: The Best Spoof I've Seen in Years

Found in ... Blog Stuff

As we all know today is April Fools Day, and today is a day in which many enjoy placing witty little tricks on each other. During my years of wondering the Blogging community, many of the "Topper Dogs" have done cute little switcheroos and manipulations to their sites as April Fools pranks. This year I was rather disappointed in the effort. Usually I can count on something clever from MetaFilter, but it seems they forgot or just plan old lost interest. In past years MetaFilter has done total site skins to make it look like they had been taken over by Google -which was hilarious-, but to my dismay absolutely ZERO effort this year. Speaking of Google, they too have completed fine misconceptions in the past. This year the minds at Google were not as bad as MetaFilter, but I still think their stab at a good joke was rather lame. Check out the Google Gulp pageto view this year trick. It's cute don't get me wrong, but I still think it is a bit short of a knee slapper. Then just before I was going to give up, I swung by the fine people at Defamer -not expecting them to play a prank, just to read whats up- and they had a post to a new Blog Hosting site TeeVee. This new blogging service is for super stars who want to Blog, and it is owned by Matthew Perry. I honestly hope that this is the playful doings of the beloved SixApart, because if it is Frick'n Brilliant thank you SixApart for making my day. Seriously check out the site, they really did put a lot of effort on this one. Over 6 or 7 mock star Blogs, and a demo section. They even added a link to their more hardcore version Immovable Object.  New Physics: Six Apart in Motion Stays in Motion

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Six Apart Ltd. is on a roll. I continue to read good things about Greg and Mena and the impressive directions Six Apart is going. Now it seems that web hosting provider 2MHost has formed a partnership with the creators of the blogging tool Movable Type and will be offering it to their members.

The partnership enables 2MHost to bundle Movable Type software into its existing hosting solution, providing its customers with Movable Type's feature-rich, robust blogging platform at an affordable price.

"Movable Type is one of the best blogging solutions in the market today and we wanted to enable our clients to benefit from its robust features," says 2MHost owner Mike Noman. "We realize not everybody wants to take the time to install the software or pay the added cost to purchase a stand-alone copy of Movable Type, so we've streamlined the process and eliminated much of the up front costs."

This is excellent news, so if you are a fan of Six Apart, a fan of Movable Type or just some one who is not scared to take a few risks, I would keep my eye on this company because you will be seeing big things.

 The Social Computing Wars

Found in ... Blog Stuff

It is thought that the social computing wars have begun. I agree, and I feel that the noise some of these technologies have been making is certainly making big timers notice and attempt to get a piece of the pie. Yahoo is preparing to launch Yahoo 360, which will be their social computing venture. Google acquired Blogger a few years back, Microsoft began a social computing model which was rejected – but I believe they are going back to the drawing board on that one – and we can’t forget about our favorite people Sixapart – the creators of MovableType -. I think this is going to get exciting, especially from a developers perspective. I am also interested to see which idea goes the furthest. Will it be hosted services such as Typepad and Yahoo 360, or will it be development environments such as MT or WordPress. Any which way it goes, you can not deny the impact social computing has had on the Internet within the past year. Some universities are even creating Social Computing programs for their IT and MIS students.

Sign up for the Yahoo 360 Beta if your interested, it is said to launch next month.

I know it is due to the blockquote tags in my post, but I terminate each tag. So why does my templet refuse to use the content definition following a blockquote?

 Gawker Launches 2 New Magazines

Found in ... Blog Stuff

I am a big fan of Gawker Media sites. I like to consider myself as a CMS guru, preferably in Movable Type and I think that the creators of Gawker are not only cutting edge, but quite briliant in that they are the only ones showing great success with this medium. Recently the Gawker Media group has launched 2 new online publications. Life Hacker, who is sponsored by Sony. And Grid Skipper, which is sponsored by Cheap Tickets.com.
Life Hacker is a online magazine covering the world of ... Oh you should just let them say it;

Computers make us more productive. Yeah, right. Lifehacker recommends the downloads, web sites and shortcuts that actually save time. Don't live to geek; geek to live.
This is a very well designed site -which does not break the path Gawker Media has laid- and covers topics such as Spy Ware blockers, search engines, CMS and Web Publishing File sharing and more.
GridSkipper is an online magazine dedicated to cheap travel, and vacation hot spots.
Scouring the world for discount flights, chic hotels—and pretty people. Gridskipper, the decadent travel guide.
Again, very well designed, and all around kudos to the minds behind these ideas. I do not think these will be the last installments from the Gawker Media group, so keep your eyes out, and give them a look see. I personally read them daily, have you?

First Addition to the Berf Network

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Even though it still needs plenty of custom work completed on it -my time is limited so I need to take it slowly- Bukezilla is the first blogger added to the Berf Network. What is the Berf Network you ask? Well my vision is to create a series of weblogs; each with their own unique personalities, then on the main BerfNet site displaying all of the updates and articles via RSS -or some other fashion not yet figured out- as kind of a community magazine. Hopefully I can create a handful of these blogs for bloggers that wish to add themselves to a blogging community, a great way to start out your blogging hobby, since it can take a very long time to be recognized within an online weblog circle. So check out Bukezilla and post a few comments to support his new online hobby, and tell him Berf sent you.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Berf Network, please email me with your request with this form.

Found in ... Blog Stuff

This weekend I added a few new sections to Berf Net -along with staying up way to late for my day job, I hate real work on the weekends-. These sections were long overdue but hey, I barely get time to work on the design of my site lately -that is why there is no php in it yet-. The new sections are the About and Portfolio page, the online resume and the contact me page, for those who would like to send me dirty little mails, or mabey even want to hire me for a web job -hint, hint , hint-. So check out the new seections and let me know what you think.

 MT Please Work For Me

Found in ... Blog Stuff

For the last few days I have been trouble shooting this problem I am having with my instalation of MT 2.6. I even notified a Professor of mine Liz Lawley. She had instructed me to check all of the paths in the config section, and to try and creating a test blog to recreate the problem. I checked the DB and the entries are stored in the correct locations, but still they are not displaying on the html pages. Please I need advice :(

UPDATE:Well I fixed it, prob. not the eaisy way, but now that I think of it, it wasn't that hard. All I did was to export the weblog data, I then recreated a new weblog in a temp location. I then imported the blog data to the new -same named- weblog. Finally I removed the weblog from the temp location, and overwrited the deleted prior one -even though you delete a weblog in MT mangmt. the files remain in your archives and index.html. Then go back to the new blogs config and reset the paths from tempo to the correct location. Bingo every thing seems to be working just fine now.

My MT 2.6 is Broken, and it Can't Get Up

Found in ... Blog Stuff

Well I have this weblog I set up for a local fishing shop in town, you may remember me referenceing it in an earlier post. One of the things I did for them was to set them up with a weblog to post news, fishing stories and stuff like that. Well just recently I was notified that the weblog was not publishing new posts to the web page. This is certainly not good, so I must solve this problem. I am using an installation of MT 2.6 and this has been going on since the 22nd of Nov. I tried posting a question on the Support Forum but still no good response. I really hope this isn't an issue with the DB, but I would like to be able to fix this with as little work as possible.
